Nestled in Italy’s Aosta Valley, this Alpine sanctuary, once a royal hunting reserve, is home to chamois, ibex, marmots, and soaring eagles. Traverse glacial valleys, high-altitude lakes, and rugged peaks while immersing yourself in spectacular mountain scenery.
Stay in welcoming Italian mountain huts, combining rustic comfort with local cuisine. For the adventurous, the trek can culminate with the ascent of Gran Paradiso (4,061 m), offering breathtaking views of the Italian Alps—a true experience of Alpine authenticity.
From Bourg St Maurice, transfer to the village of Sainte Foy to begin this Alpine adventure. The trail winds through the picturesque village of Le Miroir, offering typical regional views, before gradually ascending to the Refuge de l'Archeboc, nestled deep in the mountains.
Leaving the Vanoise region, you will cross the Col du Mont (2,636 m) to enter the Gran Paradiso National Park. Once in the Valgrisenche valley, the hike continues to Rifugio de l'Épée, where you will be greeted by warm hospitality and delicious Italian cuisine.
A spectacular traverse takes you below the steep slopes of La Grande Rousse. You’ll pass through the land of génépi, with the majestic Platte des Chamois and Grande Sassière (3,747 m) in the background. The picturesque valley of Rifugio Bezzi offers well-deserved rest at the end of the day.
Today, you leave Valgrisenche and head into Val di Rhêmes by crossing the Bassac Dere Pass. Keep an eye out for marmots, ptarmigans, and ibex that populate this region. Rifugio Benevollo awaits at the end of the day, nestled in a wild, pristine landscape.
A stage offering exceptional panoramas of the Gran Paradiso summit. The descent takes you past the stunning Leita and Rosset lakes, an enchanting setting where natural beauty reveals itself at every step. In the evening, don't miss the traditional moment of sharing around "la grolla."
You will progress through the Val du Petit Nivolet, dominated by the iconic peaks of the Grand Paradis, Ciarofon, and Tresenta. These Alpine landmarks are also home to herds of chamois. You’ll then reach the legendary Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II, a key stop for those ascending the Grand Paradis.
A magnificent traverse to Rifugio Chabod offers one last opportunity to enjoy the grand landscapes of the park. The descent to Alpe de Pravieux is the perfect chance to observe chamois and marmots one final time. For the more daring, the ascent of Grand Paradis is an option on this day, providing an unforgettable high-mountain experience.
