We leave Chamonix for a magnificent traverse along a balcony path beneath the majestic Aiguilles Rouges. In front of us, the Mont Blanc massif unfolds in all its splendor, with snow-capped peaks and shimmering glaciers. The ascent is gentle, offering stunning views of the northern side of the massif. The alpine atmosphere is already palpable, and the landscapes set the tone for this trek.
From the village of Le Tour, we begin a superb ascent to the Col de Balme, a historic pass marking the border between France and Switzerland. At the summit, a spectacular panorama opens up over the Aiguille Verte, the Drus, and the Aiguilles of Chamonix. The descent leads through a beautiful larch forest to the village of Trient, nestled in its valley.
Two options are available to reach Champex. You can choose the alpine variant via the Fenêtre d’Arpette (2665 m), a more demanding route offering exceptional views of the Trient Glacier. Alternatively, the classic path through the Bovine alpine pastures winds through blooming meadows and verdant forests. At the end of this stage, the village of Champex welcomes you by its peaceful lake. A regular bus transfer will take you to La Fouly.
We leave Switzerland for Italy by crossing the Grand Col Ferret, offering unforgettable views of the Pré de Bar Glacier and the surrounding peaks. The descent takes us into the Italian Val Ferret, where alpine pastures stretch as far as the eye can see. Overnight in Courmayeur, the perfect opportunity to indulge in delicious Italian cuisine, including the famous local gelato!
Two possible routes lead to Refuge Elisabetta. You can choose the balcony route across Val Veni, passing through Col Chécroui, which offers spectacular views of the Peuterey ridges and the Italian side of Mont Blanc. Alternatively, a short bus transfer takes you to La Visaille, followed by a shorter hike along Lake Combal to the refuge.
We start the climb to Col de la Seigne, marking our return to France and opening up to the Beaufortain landscape. The descent to the Ville des Glaciers offers a chance to taste the famous Beaufort cheese. A final ascent to Col des Fours brings us to Refuge du Bonhomme, perched in a wild and isolated setting.
We cross Col du Bonhomme for a spectacular descent through the Contamines Montjoie Nature Reserve. The trail follows the ancient Roman road, a historic route through varied alpine landscapes, before reaching the charming village of Les Contamines.
