Standing at 4,634 meters, Monte Rosa is the second-highest peak in the Alps, glowing pink at sunrise and sunset. This 7-day trek takes you through iconic trails in the Italian valleys of Macugnaga, Alagna, and Gressoney, and the glacier-rich Swiss side, offering spectacular ridges and breathtaking landscapes.
Designed for passionate hikers, the route crosses high mountain passes and cozy refuges. For an added challenge, the Breithorn summit (4,000 m) offers an unforgettable Alpine experience. From the Theodule Pass to Zermatt’s glaciers, every step reveals Monte Rosa’s grandeur.
Your adventure begins with a scenic trek around the northern tip of the Monte Rosa massif. Along the way, you'll enjoy splendid views of the surrounding peaks. The day ends in the legendary village of Saas Fee, nestled at the foot of several 4,000-meter summits, including the Dom and Weissmies—an idyllic setting to start your trek.
The day starts with a hike along the beautiful Mattmark Lake, a reservoir sitting at 2,200 meters. From there, you ascend to the Monte Moro Pass (2,868 m), marking the Swiss-Italian border. This pass offers breathtaking views of the eastern face of Monte Rosa—the highest in the Alps. You’ll descend into the remote Italian valley of Macugnaga, nestled at the foot of glaciers.
Departing from Macugnaga, you enter the wild Quaraxxa Valley, a secluded and rarely visited area. You will ascend the Turlo Pass (2,738 m), a historic smuggler’s route that has connected the Italian valleys for centuries. After crossing these pristine landscapes, you’ll arrive at the alpine meadows of Alesia and eventually reach the charming village of Alagna, renowned for its mountain traditions.
The ascent to the Olen Pass (2,881 m) offers spectacular views of the Otro Valley, a pristine natural area with picturesque hamlets nestled in the mountains. On the other side of the pass, you will descend toward the Gressoney meadows, dominated by the imposing silhouette of the Liskamm and other Monte Rosa peaks. The views are simply magical.
This stage leads you to the Slaroforco Pass (2,689 m), located just beneath the iconic Castor and Pollux peaks. The landscape here is dramatic, with glaciers and rocky slopes dominating the scene. You’ll then descend into the beautiful Ayas Valley, where the serene Forca Lake offers a peaceful rest stop.
Today, you’ll gain altitude, heading toward the Cima Blanche Pass (2,982 m), overlooking the Breuil Cervinia resort. The views are spectacular, with the Matterhorn towering majestically on the horizon. You’ll then reach the Theodulo Hut, perched at 3,317 meters, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers.
Your final day takes you back into Switzerland via the historic Theodule Pass (3,317 m), a key route between the Valais and Aosta valleys. You’ll descend toward Zermatt, the famous village at the foot of the Matterhorn, where your adventure concludes. For those who wish, the Breithorn ascent is offered as an optional climb—a unique opportunity to summit a 4,000-meter peak.
